Why Drive a Hybrid?

Driving a hybrid offers numerous benefits. Not only do hybrid powertrains increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by adding an additional fuel source, but they also have many positive impacts on the environment, such as:

  • Zero tailpipe emissions when driving in electric mode
  • Reduced smog and air pollution thanks to minimal or no idling time
  • Less need to import fossil fuels

Plus, when you drive a BMW hybrid, you’ll have access to all the luxury features you know and love with the additional perk of increased fuel efficiency and a greener planet.

Are There Different Types of Hybrid Cars?

Yes—and it’s important to know the difference as you shop for a hybrid BMW vehicle. In today’s market, there are three distinct hybrid types: a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a hybrid, and a mild hybrid (MHEV). Mild hybrid technology is typically powered by a combustion engine and a 48-volt electric motor to propel its drivetrain. This hybrid uses its power in specific situations, like Auto Start and Stops or accelerating from a standstill.

Meanwhile, an external power source doesn’t charge a traditional hybrid vehicle. Rather, it uses energy generated from gasoline or regenerative braking. This means it doesn’t support all-electric driving, largely due to its smaller battery than that of a PHEV or all-electric vehicle.

The leader in its class of vehicles, plug-in hybrids carry larger batteries which allow the vehicle to drive with all-electric capabilities within a certain range and speed. In other words, drivers can easily switch between gas and electric driving on a dime. BMW PHEVs are charged using either the standard 120-volt charger or the fast-charging 240-volt option.

Do I Need to Charge My PHEV?

Although not critical to your BMW hybrid’s performance, we recommend charging the battery to maximize efficiency and power. Without a proper charge, the BMW hybrid will prioritize gas-powered driving, and power reserves for the BMW’s eBoost functionality will be lowered.

For the best possible driving experience, our BMW dealership highly recommends charging your plug-in hybrid BMW overnight, if possible. As mentioned above, drivers can choose from different charging types—some of which are available for at-home installation, including the 120-volt and 240-volt options. However, Level 2 chargers are available nationwide with fast-charging options for those on the go.

With a fully-charged PHEV, drivers can experience all that BMW has to offer with its hybrid capabilities. Reach out to a BMW expert with any questions you may have about hybrid charging.
