Servicing on Transmission

What Is a Transmission?

First thing’s first, let’s define a transmission’s purpose in terms of your vehicle. The transmission is responsible for converting the engine’s combustion power into momentum. Momentum is what drives your vehicle’s wheels forward. Simply put: Without a transmission, your vehicle would be unable to move.

The transmission uses gear shifts to accelerate to different speeds while helping maintain the smoothness of your drive. With a good transmission, your vehicle won’t jerk when changing gears.

Working on the Transmission

Are There Different Kinds of Transmissions?

Depending on which model you drive, your transmission may have one of these four types:

  • Manual transmission
  • Automatic transmission
  • Continuously variable transmission (CVT)
  • Semi-automatic and dual-clutch transmission

A manual transmission is known to be the simplest and oldest type of transmission. Also known as a “stick shift”, this kind of transmission is now somewhat rare and mostly found in older or specialty models.

An automatic transmission is the most common type found today. It gives drivers standard gear shifts (Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive), so drivers can simply select the gear they need. It essentially does all the work for you.

A CVT uses a system of belts and pulleys to produce an infinite range of ratios–no gear required. This is a more technologically advanced transmission and has a prime advantage of improving fuel economy.

A semi-automatic transmission uses a similar mechanical layout to a conventional transmission, but it uses a system of pneumatics and actuators to change gears. In a dual-clutch transmission (DCT), there are separate clutches for both odd and even gears, which allows for faster shifts.

If you’re unsure about which kind of transmission your vehicle has, check its  owner’s manual or let a member of our service team take a look for you.

What Is the Cost of Replacing a Transmission?

If you’re looking to replace your vehicle’s transmission, expect the cost to be somewhere between $1,800 and $3,400. Of course, this varies from dealership to dealership and can be affected based on different labor costs, specials parts, and so on.
