The first trees of Shelburne Farm were planted in the early 1900s, making it the oldest pick-your-own apple orchard in Eastern Massachusetts. While many families have been in charge of Shelburne Farm over the past century, the constant that remains is that each family is dedicated to the successful harvest of their crops.
Furthermore, they’re dedicated to providing locals and out-of-town visitors with an experience they’ll surely never forget. This is accomplished through their many offered activities, such as live entertainment, food trucks, farm animals, and—of course—pick-your-own produce.
Visitors can likely spend a whole day at Shelburne Farm and never run out of things to do. That’s because they offer a ton of different activities for people to enjoy. Let’s take a look!
Pick Your Own
Going out into the orchard to pick your own variety of apples, peaches, pears, and pumpkins provides hours of fun. In doing so, not only will you go home with all the fresh produce you need, but running through the orchards and taking pictures is also a great way to create family memories.
Food Trucks & Entertainment
The only thing better than spending a day in the orchards is having a delicious meal to look forward to. Every weekend, Shelburne Farm has local food trucks come in and serve pizza, seafood, Asian, and North American-inspired food.
You won’t want to miss out on any live events at Shelburne Farm, such as live music, hayrides, or an antique cider press demonstration. Make sure you follow them on Facebook to always stay up to date.
Farm Animals
When visiting Shelburne Farm, make sure to pay a visit to the farm animals. They have quite the family of barnyard animals that are just waiting for you to visit. Llamas, goats, sheep, and donkeys are just a few of the animals you can spend time with.
Shelburne Farm previously teamed up with the University of Massachusetts to be part of the UMass Extension Fruit Program. With their help and expertise, Shelburne Farm was able to learn new planting and horticultural techniques.
This has helped grow both their harvest bounty and the variety of produce grown annually. With the help of the UMass program, Shelburne now grows more than 20 types of peaches and 80 types of apples!
