Car and Driver Takes the 2018 BMW M550i xDrive Out for a First Drive
Recently, a Car and Driver writer received the enviable opportunity to drive the 2018 BMW 550i xDrive on the A8 autobahn in Germany, and he understandably used this chance to fully engage the throttle and experience the power of the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine.
The 2018 550i xDrive has the distinct honor of being the quickest 5 Series that BMW has manufactured yet, racing to a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The 4.4-liter, DOHC V8 engine is married to an 8-speed automatic transmission (with manual shifting mode) and produces 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.
You can adjust the driving dynamics to suit your mood or the current road environment. Comfort mode is the default setting and offers lighter steering, a gentler feeling suspension, and quieter engine sounds. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system distributes torque as needed, while Adaptive M suspension ensures a comfortable, relaxed ride that boasts minimized body roll.
Drivers may also choose Sport and Sport+ modes, both of which employ specialized steering and suspension tunings to bring you a more engaged driving experience and precise handling.
The interior and exterior both feature M-specific accents like distinctive badging, uniquely-painted brake calipers and M Sport steering wheel, tailpipes, and brakes.
The 2018 BMW 550i xDrive is expected to arrive in the United States soon. If you’d like to learn more about the five-passenger sedan, visit our showroom at 71 Portsmouth Ave in Stratham.
